ABSTRACT

The formulation of an enduring space strategy necessitates that it be distinct from land, maritime, air, and cyber strategies. Towards that end, this chapter examines space strategy that complements the general theory of war as described by past strategists’ work that have stood the test of time, including those of Thucydides, Sun Tzu, and Clausewitz. The chapter describes the purpose of space strategy, along with various tenets of a general theory of space strategy—including command of space, offensive and defensive strategies, strategy for the less capable, dispersal and concentration, and strategic positions. This foundational space strategy can be used when considering great power competition in space, along with the strategies for medium and emerging space powers.
