ABSTRACT

This chapter presents viewpoint on internal crisis communication. It also presents an overview of research on internal crisis communications and subsequently discusses how communication with co-workers differs from communication with external individuals and groups. The chapter deals with the goals of internal crisis communication and the kinds of communication that should be prioritized during the various phases of the crisis. The American professor in organization psychology Karl E. Weick’s theory on sensemaking is greatly significant for the area of internal crisis communication. He has conducted a number of studies on how we make sense and understanding in crisis situations and the significance that this sensemaking holds for our behavior. Internal crisis communication may seem like a self-explanatory concept. D. L. Sturges has proposed three different goals of crisis communication, which, from an internal perspective, can be described as follows: providing instructions, contribute to processing the crisis, and strengthen loyalty and engagement.
