ABSTRACT

The main aim in writing this book is to demonstrate how corpus linguistics (CL) can be used to illuminate the target models of English that are used by teachers in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom context. This is at a time when the historic target English approach based on restrictive Standard British/American norms is coming under increasing ideological and linguistic challenge due to the changing English language landscape. By applying corpus-based techniques to illuminate the types of spoken English that teachers use in their classroom interactions with learners at the level of language variety, a better understanding can be gained of the ways in which changing trends and perspectives surrounding English may be filtering down to the classroom level. In this way, this book will broaden the discussions in the on-going academic debate concerning suitable target models of English for EFL pedagogy beyond their current mainly theoretical and speculative nature. In this regard, it is considered both timely and long overdue.
