ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on listening and how the students might use auditory methods to remember key information. It describes the three revision methods how to Make a Mnemonic, Record It, so recording information onto a tablet or smartphone to hear it back, and Discuss It, where revision material can be discussed with a partner or in a group. Students are introduced to the idea of a mnemonic by explaining that we can remember things by making a link between the first letter of words we need to learn to another word that might be more memorable. Students with Speech, Language and Communication Needs can often have variable listening skills, so auditory methods may need to be reinforced with visual or kinaesthetic approaches to be fully effective. Research has also indicated that repetition and rehearsal strategies work best when they are supported with mental imagery and visualisation, so this should be encouraged whilst keeping the focus primarily on auditory input.
