Gender and the Legal Labour Market book
This chapter reviews some of the literature concerned with women’s position in employment in general, and in the professions in particular, with the aim of crafting a theory of women solicitors’ articulation into the professional labour market. In this introductory section we provide a precis of our ideas for the non-academic reader. We then move to a fuller discussion of the work which has influenced our own perspective. We have tried to avoid the kind of summary which has been described as ‘a tedious British-style review of all the literature on gender and the professions’ (Cohn, 1994). However, given that this particular area of study is both complex and controversial (Crompton, 1997), there is some substantial exposition of the theories and the way we will be applying them.
