ABSTRACT

The most frequent causes of physical injury are car accidents, but for teenagers and those in their twenties, athletic injuries are the next most common. The sport injuries that are most common are in those sports where there is bodily contact, such as football, and head injury is one of the most common forms of injury. Intense injury can cause immediate problems with brain function, and recurrent injuries that are less severe can also have adverse effects. The most common brain functions that are altered by severe acute injuries are memory and executive functions. Repeated head injuries may also cause chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a progressive dementing disease. This chapter will discuss these behavioral disorders and their mechanisms, as well as possible treatments.
