ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a recap of what social interaction difficulties may look like in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It looks at social interaction and provides practical ideas and strategies to support this. The reciprocal social interaction is a key area of difficulty for children with ASD. There are a lot of misconceptions around ASD; often these are routes in stereotypical views of ASD. The very nature of a diagnosis of ASD means that social interaction can be challenging for children with ASD. Remember that social communication and interaction difficulties are a core difficulty of ASD. The teacher included the mainstream children as helpers and partners for the children with ASD at every opportunity even to the point of teaching the children how to imitate. Adding visual supports and clear structure can make the game more predictable, reduce anxiety, and enable the child to engage.
