ABSTRACT

Drama has a language of objects of its own, where set design, props and costume contribute to the aesthetic and overall meaning of what is being performed. Dramatic engagement with props and other objects allows work, therefore, that is sensory-based and suitable for children who are engaged with and enjoy sensory experience. In dramatic work with children, it is possible to explore the semantic meanings of objects, exploring their properties, function and social meaning through drama and role play. Dramatic objects can provide a bridge between two people and allow a person-to-object-to-person form of communication. This chapter presents activities that involve thinking about objects in practical, concrete ways, including such things as properties and function as well as similarities and differences between objects. Some activities consider people as objects and are less concerned with such things as people as communicators or the roles different people play in our lives.
