ABSTRACT

In drama, there are a number of customary ways of ending a session, which include the audience clapping and the actors taking a bow, closing the curtains of the performance space, packing away props and removing costumes. Dramatherapy uses ‘de-roling’ exercises such as physically brushing off a role, reconnecting with the here and now by noticing actual details of the room and the people in it, or taking time for individuals to re-connect with themselves by relating some personal details. This chapter presents activities that suggest ways of ending individual sessions as well as how to bring a group to a close that has run for a length of time. In both cases, the aim of the work is twofold: to provide a clear indication that the group work has come to end whilst enabling children to reflect a little on what they have learned.
