ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 examines the effect on dance of foreign religious and governmental systems imposed on Senegambia specifically, and Africa in general. The chapter examines the interaction between traditional Mandinka dance and the Islamic and Christian religious systems. Chapter 6 also engages discourse on colonialism and it discusses Modernity first as a concept, and second as a historically specific period. Within those constructs, the effects of colonialism and Modernity on indigenous Mandinka dance practice, dance transference, and retention is examined.
