ABSTRACT

Information is valuable in its own right to organisations. It is a resource that must be captured, managed, retrieved and invested in for the benefit of the whole. Its value is realised when it allows us to make decisions which enhance the effectiveness of the organisation in fulfilling its purpose. However, while we talk about the ‘information system’ and invest in infrastructure, software and hardware we rarely think about the information itself and how we exploit it for value. This chapter sets out a range of simple, value focused propositions, designed to help the reader comprehend how to exploit information for value. The propositions are supported by a range of vignettes and case studies to illustrate the potential. By the end of the chapter the reader will be able to apply the ideas to their own situation and understand how they might realise additional value.
