ABSTRACT

In designing the intelligent organisation we have established the need for change in the way we use information and realise its value. Making all of this work relies on changing the way we structure and use information. If we want our people, processes and systems to act intelligently then we need to provide the necessary information, in a timely manner and in a suitable format. We need to educate and enable people and create our organisation and its systems to use information in ways which activate decisions, without human intervention where that is appropriate, to close the gap between where we are and where we want to be, between actual and desired states. The chapter introduces the idea of pursuing an information strategy (as opposed to a technology strategy) and designing and implementing that strategy through a ‘Lean Information System’, a radical approach to information systems design rooted in demand led thinking. Readers will be able to recognise weaknesses and deficiencies in the systems they typically encounter and be equipped with the insights to allow them to stimulate change.
