ABSTRACT

Arriving at Genoa on 12 August 1529, Charles V waited there for confirmation of the conclusion of the Treaty of Cambrai before moving on to Piacenza, where he stayed for several weeks. Although it was some months before Charles finally decided against going to Rome and Naples, in mid-September he asked the pope to come to meet him at Bologna. Etiquette dictated that the emperor should travel to where the pope was, so Charles waited for Clement to reach Bologna, which he did on 24 October. Charles arrived there on 5 November, escorted by hundreds of sumptuously dressed courtiers, many Italians, including Andrea Doria and Alessandro de’ Medici, and thousands of soldiers – more an army than a military escort. Charles had wanted more money from Florence, at least 200,000 ducats; Clement would rather that Florence had surrendered to him, not the emperor.
