ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the difference between intrinsic or internal, and extrinsic or external motivation. Kids are motivated by following six types of values: basic needs, relationships, interests, activities, competence, and autonomy. They value their relationships as another aspect of intrinsic motivation. Kids are certainly motivated by their internal interests. They are also motivated intrinsically by different types of activities. Another aspect of value is competence, or success. The parents role is to be supportive and help kids develop competence. Kids value autonomy, or their independence. In order for parents to meet their kids’ basic needs, they should take what they learned and take actions to meet those needs. Paying attention and asking questions are two effective tools to respond to kid's interests. Parents need to preserve their relationship, and if they want their kids to be motivated and successful, they should honor their perspective.
