ABSTRACT

Expectations are a difficult balance. Parents expectations drive their kid’s motivation and behavior. He or she will respond to their expectations, both in positive and negative ways. The four major expectation style from parents are the following: pressure cooker, royal family, helicopters and lawnmowers, and yoga. An all too common issue is parents expecting perfectionism from their kids. Kids feel like they are in a pressure cooker, under enormous stress, and just waiting to explode. On the other hand, parents sometimes create a royal family for their kids. In this situation, parents treat their sons and daughters as kings and queens. The term "helicopter parents" is used to describe parents who constantly monitor their kids and try to help solve problems. Yoga parents fall between the extremes. They are balanced in their expectations, finding ways to encourage their kids to dream big dreams, while supporting them to also be realistic.
