ABSTRACT

The Sha Tin valley is close to Kowloon and sheltered from the metropolis by a high range of mountains which has hitherto stopped urban expansion in the direction. Relatively good transportation services have made Sha Tin attractive as a residential area for people working in Kowloon, and an unknown number of people commute daily from the valley to their factories and offices. The Sha Tin valley opens up towards the southern inlet of Tolo Harbour known as Tide Cove. The villages have seen the arrival of small-scale cottage industries and there are even a few industrial plants of considerable size in the valley. For instance, related people of the surname Wei are to be found in both Tai Wai and Tin Sam, big multi-surname villages, as well as in Sheung Keng Hau which is inhabited exclusively by Wei.
