ABSTRACT

The village farmers said that it was impossible to construct a reasonably accurate picture of the average profits made in vegetables. One of the most important investments for the immigrant farmer in Sha Tin is the rent he has to pay for his land. The immigrant farmers who have occupied unleased Crown Land may, to some extent, get compensation for their less productive soil - such land is generally situated on the hillsides - by the fact that they do not have to pay rent for their fields. A farmer needs a number of tools, like ploughs, hoes, knives, buckets, carrying poles, and bamboo canes. All farmers in the Keng Hau area take one or two breaks during their work, in the early morning, which is mandatory, and in the afternoon, to go to a tea house in Tin Sam or in Sha Tin Market.
