ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a general view of sociological work, focuses on recent approaches on the ‘philosophy’ of information and communication systems and its theoretical links to social theory. It reviews different arguments about information technology and examines contemporary ideas about social theory. The emerging approach is that an entirely new concept is required and that there is a vital need for improved analysis with respect to the assessment of technological issues. It can be argued that theoretical considerations have to be linked with practical methodology in order to evaluate technological and societal approaches, because different sets of complexities exist between the cultural and the operational aspects of the functional role of technology. For sociology, one possible way out of the methodological dilemma, and the whole approach to it, it could be useful to adopt tools as simulation for instance which by economics is a day in and out business.
