ABSTRACT

The innovations of the last ten years in the area of mini-computing and micro-computing, and the introduction of new related technologies such as automated office systems, telematics and production automation systems, mean that today even the smallest businesses are able to purchase and use computer-based information systems. This chapter is not intended to provide complete, definitive answers to the complex problems raised by information systems (IS) and the management of information technologies (IT) in small businesses. Rather, it will provide an overview of the current state of knowledge and an analysis of the main elements of a research area that has become essential to the understanding of small businesses.
