ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not only teachers, facilitators and managers wondering how to create an environment that motivates and engages learners. Parents and carers home-schooling children have been drawn to consider how learners form a connection with what they are studying. Design potentially has a lot to contribute to the space of formal education – from intuitive learning management systems, to the design of innovative learning environments and smart furniture. Jack Mezirow accounts for transformative learning as “learning that transforms problematic frames of reference to make them more inclusive, discriminating, reflective, open, and emotionally able to change”. Transformative learning theory began with adult learning yet connects with contemporary calls for access to life-long learning and continuous education.
