ABSTRACT

The Latin poet known as Terence (Publius Terentius Afer) wrote, “Nothing that is truly human is truly abhorrent.” My commitment to his observation is an adamantine one, so I can say without reservation that it is rare when I meet a patient whom I simply do not like. That is not to say that I feel an indefatigable fondness for all of my patients from the moment that I meet them, but within a session or two I am usually been able to discover something admirable and appealing about the individuals and families who come to work with me.
