ABSTRACT

This chapter combines the analyses of the mega-technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to project a perspective on the likely form and dynamics of the economy it will shape. Fourth Industrial Revolution presents some profound challenges in terms of the struggle for attention in hyper-competitive global markets, the expanding scope for automation of even the most traditionally secure jobs, and the coordination of responses on the part of individuals and communities to an increasingly chaotic socioeconomic system. The chapter makes use of the Brisbane Club model to derive a view on what individuals and communities can do to prepare themselves to mitigate the challenges posed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and position themselves to seize the opportunities it presents. It considers the “system” of sorts for orienting oneself to the challenges and opportunities in the future economy. Blockchain-based systems of institutional governance facilitate the emergence of new systems of value-creating exchange by offering organisations a new institutional technology for governance.
