ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in this book. The book analyses and controls the effects of the parasitic images induced by ideological representations, resituates translation within the general framework of meaning-producing behaviours and justify its specific role in the global process of communication; and specifies the constitutive factors of Translation. It explores in detail the defining factors and the characteristic procedures included in each individual field. The book also deals with interlinguistic 'homologies' or the range of potential options definable for any given ST, at the sentential, extrasentential, and textual levels. It demonstrates on a choice of application texts the complementarity and the productivity of the two fields of description in a variety of textual and contextual configurations. The book further traces some of the possible extensions of the present system to two related fields: the teaching of translation and Translation Criticism.
