ABSTRACT

After briefly presenting homework as a form of women’s work characterised by significant inequalities and injustices, the introductory chapter advances an integrative framework of gender justice for the purpose of theorising homework. The framework comprises four dimensions of gender justice: recognition, representation, rights and redistribution (Utting, 2007; Utting, 2008), used to discuss the types of injustice affecting homework. Also represented in the framework are the structures and processes of capitalism and the patriarchy, and the relations of domination, that are widely held to be the major factors that determine homework injustice. We subsequently structure the book around this framework and use it to discuss the means for bringing justice and positive change to homeworkers’ lives.
