ABSTRACT

This final chapter will deal with those aspects of the transmission of the vocal culture of the era of the cas tratos into Bellini’s time that follow on from the matters dealt with in previous sections of this study. It will therefore consider how musical expression was realized in bel canto, bearing in mind Italian interests ia poetic drama for which instrumental music took essentially a secondary place. Later, consideration will also be given to the types of voices that still contributed to realizing these bel canto ideals in the early nineteenth century.
