ABSTRACT

Considerable public concern exists about the consumption of food products containing ingredients that come from genetically engineered (GE) plants. An overwhelming majority of Americans would like foods to be labeled regarding the presence of ingredients from GE organisms. Since much of the feed consumed by food animals comes from GE corn and soybean crops, animal production relies on GE technologies. More recently, genetic engineering technologies have been used to develop new animal species. The technologies allow for the insertion of changes to genomes and can knock out genes that are not wanted. If the future, GE animals will provide species that are resistant to diseases, thereby reducing production costs as well as animal suffering.
