ABSTRACT

The United States is not a major producer of aquaculture products. Instead, we import more than 80 percent of the seafood we eat. Due to the biologically unsustainable levels of many wild fish species, farm-raised seafood has become an important component of the diets of many Americans. Asian countries provide a vast majority of the world’s farm-raised seafood, and given contaminated waters and use of antibiotics in the production of farm-raised fish, there are health concerns. Another concern is whether aquaculture products may be unhealthy due to their mercury content.
