ABSTRACT

Public support for the humane treatment of pets is broadening to include food animals. As society’s expectations change, practices used in the production of food animals are also changing. The manner in which food animals are castrated, have their tails docked, or have their horns removed are being questioned. Practices used to transport and slaughter animals are being scrutinized to determine whether there is unnecessary suffering. For some practices, legislatures are enacting provisions to preclude those accompanied by too much suffering. In other situations, certification programs exist in which labels can be affixed to products announcing that animals were treated humanely.
