ABSTRACT

Consumers have objected to the crowded conditions that exist at some animal production facilities. Their complaints have caused the industry to adjust production practices and label products with information concerning production practices. Crowded facilities often have foul air and issues concerning the disposal of manure. Practices that prevent animals from moving around are being eliminated, and new facilities are adopting housing designs that provide the animals more space. The dense confinement of animals is also related to uses of antibiotics, growth hormones, and feed additives. Marketing programs are touting products that were not accompanied by an objectionable input.
