ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how the present unsustainability of the transport sector can be reduced. The political interest in 'sustainable transportation' raises the same questions as the case of 'sustainable development'. Studies on the theme of sustainable transport or sustainable mobility represent a new and rapidly expanding field of research, difficult to survey. The chapter deals with how to understand historical change, how to understand societal processes of change, and how to interpret political texts. It discusses how to analyse the strategic content of political texts describing transport policies. The chapter considers the theoretical aspects of the social and cultural role of the automobile. The development of transport systems and transport policy-making are elements of historical processes. In order to get hold of the significant features of a textual presentation of a transport policy, it is important to focus on the strategic elements of the policy in question.
