ABSTRACT

This chapter examines case studies in which industry took the initiative in forming the interaction. The Sagami Chemical Research Centre is one of the organizations set up in 1963 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Industrial Bank of Japan. The Toray Science Foundation was established through an endowment from Toray Ltd in 1960. The Hayashibara Biochemical Research Institute was detached from its parent company, Hayashibara Ltd, and set up as an affiliated company in 1970. The Mitsubishi Chemical Life Science Research Laboratory was set up to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Mitsubishi Chemical. As a joint-stock company, it naturally has in mind the application of research results over the long term; therefore, the laboratory does not conduct research of a topical nature. Tsukuba Research Consortium was set up within the Tsukuba Science City as a new type of research organization through the joint efforts of eight corporations.
