ABSTRACT

The second chapter of the book explores the extent to which certain international sports venues (ISVs) are considered critical infrastructure for the delivery of an international sports event (ISE). In doing so, it evaluates how ISV resilience will vary between international sports events, depending on their size and scale. Consideration is then given to the impact and consequences upon certain ISEs, should an emergency or crises affect one or more venue, stadium or arena. The chapter includes two case studies on resilient stadium design from the USA and the Philippines, respectively. The key components of the chapter are an overview of sport event and venue resilience, the contrasting positive and negative perspectives for sport events resilience and some of the strategic and often conflicting objectives for sport when managing crises and disasters. The underlying aim of the chapter is to scrutinise the extent to which ISVs can be considered critical infrastructure (CI) for the successful hosting and delivery of international sports events.
