ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 highlights the need to understand that effective disaster management in relation to both international sports events (ISEs) and international sports venues (ISVs) should recognise the important role of the private sector. In doing so, it explores the particular context and hybrid nature of international sports events and partnerships between key stakeholders. The chapter discusses how the private dimensions play an important role in enhancing disaster management in the sports sector. There is an underlying acknowledgement that crises and disasters also impact upon the interconnectedness of states, societies and economies, all of which interconnect with sport. As such, the chapter profiles the value of fostering successful public–private partnerships (PPPs) in the context of ISEs. The attraction of developing PPPs is further illustrated through two case studies on (1) the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and (2) the development of PPPs in the island city-state of Singapore. In the context of the COVID-19 global pandemic, sport-related examples of the private sector as a source of innovation in disaster management are introduced. The underlying argument proposed in this chapter is that enhancing these partnerships will almost inevitably result in enhanced resilience for ISEs and ISVs.
