ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes the key bureaucratic aspects of asylum seeking and resettlement, focusing on the contemporary global system of refugee governance as well as the regimes of the two country cases: Turkey and Canada. It provides a brief historical overview of Turkey’s asylum policies and how the country acts as a ‘bridge’ in a transnational asylum governance structure that is underpinned by its geographical limitation on asylum seekers from non-European countries. The book analyses asylum seeking practices and experiences of asylum travellers in Turkey and their encounters with Turkey’s geographically exclusionary asylum system. It describes the incorporation phase of the journey, the resettlement of those refugees who have been screened and approved for entry into Canada. The book examines the various aspects of Canada’s resettlement programme and the experiences of asylum travellers in Canada after the completion of their resettlement.
