ABSTRACT

The asylum journey, according to one of my informants, is a ‘journey of hope’. It does not simply derive from the ‘right to escape’ from the country of origin and arrival in Turkey as the country of asylum. What makes it a ‘journey of hope’ is rather the idea and possibility of resettlement to Canada via Turkey through the global refugee regime implemented by UNHCR. This chapter, which I call the incorporation phase of the asylum journey, examines the process of resettlement which begins not in the country of resettlement, but in the country of asylum, Turkey through IOM Turkey’s cultural orientation programme sponsored by Canada. The chapter turns to resettlement experiences and practices of asylum travellers in Canada based on interviews conducted with asylum travellers.
