ABSTRACT

Many of the concrete interventions the therapist makes from session to session are subject to one and the same strategy. They are all preparations for – and steps along the way to interpretations. Through the interpretations, the therapist challenges the individual to get involved with the repressed aspects and recognize them as her own. When the isolated parts are taken back and integrated into the personality, the person appears as more authentic and whole. Psychoanalysis has changed both with regard to the understanding of pathology and concerning therapeutic technique. It is no longer just a matter of interpretation in a narrow sense. During the course of the therapy, the material which is activated may be of a kind which makes it unsuitable for interpretation. The quality of the transference informs the therapist, of which unconscious relational needs are most pressing in the situation. This means that the therapist must be capable of distinguishing between conflict transference and deficit transference.
