ABSTRACT

Internship is a time to learn the profession with a safety net. It is a great opportunity to sharpen school counselors’ strengths and work on their weaknesses. When they first start interning it can be overwhelming, because they’re the ‘new person’. A good supervisor will help school counsellors adjust and learn the ins-and-outs of the school. In any aspect of life, communicating is important. When they’re interning they need to build a good rapport with their supervisor. Flexibility is an essential quality to being a school counselor. Working in a school can be very frustrating. In one of their counseling classes, school counselors probably wrote a self-care plan as an assignment. Self-care is arguably the most important aspect of preventing burn out. Many interns are working another job during internship, might have to take care of their children, or just have other responsibilities that require their attention.
