ABSTRACT

Working with the administration is key to implementing a successful counseling program. This chapter discusses what it means to be on an administrative team and the importance of advocacy in the profession. Each state should have their own standards for school counselors. Standards, like those in the classroom, determine what a counselor should be doing in regard to the role and responsibility. An example of state standards is from the Ohio Department of Education. The standards include an emphasis on student learning and achievement; shared leadership; data-based decision-making; communication and collaboration; and ongoing professional learning. With the adoption of the Ohio Standards for School Counselors, Ohio has clearly defined the knowledge, skills and competencies of effective school counselors. These standards promote the most effective school counseling practices and offer a core set of expectations for Ohio school counselors.
