ABSTRACT

The first step in creating a comprehensive program that is in line with the ASCA National Model is to start with the foundation. The ASCA National Model states, "School counselors create comprehensive school counseling programs that focus on student outcomes, teach student competencies and are delivered with identified professional competencies". They provide an in-depth overview of what a school counseling program should look like. According to ASCA, The ASCA School Counselor Competencies outline the knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes that ensure school counselors are equipped to meet the rigorous demands of the profession and the needs of pre-K–12 students. The ASCA website has templates for lesson plans, calendar, monthly checklists, use of time assessments, action plans, school data profile, curriculum action plan, and more. As counselors successfully incorporate data-based decision-making and program planning into their work, they will witness positive academic and personal changes in the lives of their students.
