ABSTRACT

Every school counselor should have a seasoned person he/she goes to for advice. Supervision isn’t something that can always be done in a school setting. Having a mentor can replace the supervision that a school counselor might not receive in his/her own school. This chapter gets into detail about seeking out mentors, and the importance of supervision and consultation. In the clinical mental health world, supervision is mandatory for counselors to obtain licensure. As school counselors, supervision isn’t as strict or limited. Mentorship is important to all areas of work, but there aren’t many programs that are school counselor driven. The role of a mentor is to coach, guide, nurture and support new counselors as they transition into this field. A mentor provides support, encourages development, offers suggestions and advice on a variety of topics, and shares resources. A mentor also shares experiences and wisdom to help mentees grow personally and professionally.
