ABSTRACT

School counselors in training take a course on crisis but when it happens in the field it is a humbling experience. After a crisis happens the school counselor is considered the resident expert. They are the ones that the faculty and students will go to for advice. This chapter discusses post crisis interventions and prevention resources. The policy and procedures manual includes information about a crisis team, how to utilize the crisis team, who to contact (if not a crisis team), how to activate a response to crisis in the building, who to direct the media to, and the immediate steps to take. The chapter lists some fundamental roles of school counselors during a crisis. Prevention for varying types of crises can be different, but there are universal designs. Creating a positive school climate, having assessments, ensuring that students are monitored at all times, and using best practices within the school are all preventative measures that are universal.
