ABSTRACT

School counselors are unique, because they get to see students in a variety of settings. This can allow school counselors to have a close relationship with their students. Sometimes boundaries are grey due to the nature of the school setting. There needs to be a balance with maintaining a mentoring and professional relationship with students. If there is no balance, then boundaries can be crossed. Crossing boundaries can happen easily in the first year of counseling. A good way to observe student’s social behavior is by attending school sporting events, chaperoning dances, and going to other school events. A school counselor should consider positive and possible risks with attending events outside of the school. In a society driven by social media, it’s vital that school counselors stay current with what is happening virtually. When a school counselor allows a dual relationship to happen or doesn’t keep strict boundaries there is the risk for transference and counter-transference to happen.
