ABSTRACT

Depending upon the school setting, a school counselor will either do more individual or group counseling. This chapter discusses the varying aspects of counseling students individually and in groups. When counseling elementary students, it can be hard for them to engage individually. They might not have the vocabulary or be timid. Middle school can be a hard time during a student’s life. There are a lot of resources available for helping girls navigate self-esteem, body image, and relationships. When working individually with students, it’s important to be empathic and understand what they’re going through developmentally. Individual counseling at the high school level is one of the largest roles for the school counselor. A school counselor will see students about college, vocation, mental health, relationships, academia, and whatever else is on their mind. Small groups can be very effective and a great way to see a handful of students at once.
