ABSTRACT
Between 1978 and 1980, C.A.R.E. put together a modest research and information centre at Magee College. One member of the team took overall responsibility for it, but everyone contributed to it, compiling support material for the radio series, collecting reports from various parts of the world, responding to requests for information or advice and establishing useful contacts. The class should have received more systematic tutoring in research methods and more vigorous discussion of alternative conceptual frameworks for interpreting material. The extra-mural certificate students completed a number of research projects and the evening class students compiled a comprehensive folder on domestic heating. Research that can contribute to such a solution can only come from inquiries planned according to theoretically guided speculation. One important way in which skilled researchers have tried to construct co-operative relationships with working class organisations has been through research and information centres.
