ABSTRACT

An analysis of the characteristics of population growth, employment status, household size and slum formation in Lucknow City clearly demonstrates an excess demand for housing in the city. This chapter looks at how land is accessed by different socio-economic groups in Lucknow City, and how the nature of various land appropriation processes changed during the 1970s and 1980s. It examines the some major land delivery agents who operate in dynamic interactions with each other in the urban land markets of Lucknow City. The chapter explores the analysis to cover the urban land supply trends that have developed over the 1970s and 1980s in the city’s land market. The type and nature of urban land markets in Lucknow City have changed significantly. The balance of land appropriations has shifted from an individual level to institutional and group-based levels. The urban land markets of Lucknow City are managed by three sectors, viz. the public, private and cooperative sectors.
