ABSTRACT

This chapter examines information on land prices from different data sources and the resultant trends in land prices that emerge from them. It aims to compare the behaviour of land prices as recorded in different data sources to see how consistent these sources are in reporting price levels and trends. The chapter analyses how real land prices changed in the study colonies between 1970 and 1990. To analyse trends in land prices in Lucknow city, it explores land price changes at the ‘city-wide’ level; and land price changes in the peripheral areas in Lucknow city. In order to collect land price information from the newspapers, all colonies that had plot sale advertisements which included prices were taken into consideration. Prior to the mid 1980s, land prices in the cooperative sector were at or above private sector land prices. But this relationship changed in the mid-and the late-1980s, when land prices in the cooperative sector were below private sector prices.
