ABSTRACT

In our initial discussion three seemingly simple questions were implied:

What do we mean by treason?

Why do some people become traitors?

In what circumstances does this take place?

Concerning (1) our case studies have shown that treason cannot be simply defined. The subject/experience is open to a number of different - sometimes conflicting - interpretations and is often conditioned by (3). Moreover, while question (2) has obvious psychological dimensions, question (3) has certain sociological implications.
