ABSTRACT

The cultural continuity is better safeguarded by some groups than others, that the invisible threads between people are thicker among some. With today’s high standards of productivity, with flex working and mobile employees, it can be a challenge to gather as a group or set aside time for the transmission of culture within organizations. For instance, despite their wide geographic dispersion, Jews are very effective in transmitting their culture through the use of stories and rituals. The Seder rituals are extremely effective in transmitting culture because every year at exactly the same time, a cadence emerges. By working together on the float, the cultural coherence of the community is reinforced. After the party, there tends to be a period of contemplation and conformation during which core cultural values are reaffirmed and control over conduct is tightened. One might think that carnival would lead to rebellion and the decimation of a culture. Power relationships reverse during carnival.
