ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some stories that examine the themes of reanimation and reorientation in the cultures of far distant peoples, and in organizations right around the corner. It focuses on an area where people practice a “useful” religion, and a place where “soullessness” is considered a desirable state. It is a great challenge for people to stay in touch with the purpose, or the spirit, of their organization. It might seem a huge step from the complicated and exciting world of the Hindu gods to the offices of Western organizations, but it turns out to be not such a leap after all. Everyone in the organization should, from time to time, asks themselves whether their behaviours and actions actually advance the organization’s foundational purpose or merely serve its operational systems. The chapter looks at four mechanisms for mystifying violence exist in every organization. These mechanisms include invisibility, compartmentalization, restricting or spreading responsibility, and dehumanizing, denying the soul.
