ABSTRACT

A mindful approach reminds the ethnographer not just to “be here now” while observing but to “be there, again” when writing up extended or elaborated field notes after a day in the field. I provide examples of descriptions that resist the press of time and that bring the reader back into those past-present moments with the ethnographer. I also consider ways of finding pleasure in the writing of field notes, as we get to “live twice,” re-experiencing our moments in the field. (This is not to dismiss the pain we may also feel when we re-experienced intense emotions generated through our work. Mindfulness helps us to accept it all.)
